Yalumba Samuel’s Collection 2017 Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mataro, $28
GSM, Grenache Shiraz Mataró (also known as Mourvèdre), is one of my favourite blends, especially when it comes from South Australia’s Barossa Valley, where there are many superb examples of these three varieties. Each is harvested separately and brings a different character to the wine: the lighter Grenache providing perfume and spice, the Shiraz adding structure and some richer fruit flavours, and the Mataró adding texture and earthiness. They all blend together seamlessly and the result is a rich, juicy, aromatic wine with wonderful raisiny, spicy notes and gorgeous silky tannins.
