Yalumba 2018 Barossa Bush Vine Grenache, $28
A lot of people would be surprised to know that Australia has some of the oldest grape vines in the world, since phylloxera wiped out crops in a lot of plantings overseas. I’ve always loved Grenache made from the old bush vines in Barossa and McLaren Vale. It has so much flavour and character, yet it is easy-drinking, not as heavy as Shiraz but still plenty of complexity. One of seven wines in the new Samuel’s Collection honouring Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, this 2018 vintage has plum, berry and dark cherry notes that blend seamlessly with the velvety tannins.
