Weemala 2015 Gewürztraminer, $20
I’m a great fan of Gewürztraminer. Its ever so slightly sweet perfume and flavour provides a lovely counterpoint to a lot of Asian dishes, and I think it’s definitely one of the country’s most underrated varieties. Peter Logan, of Logan Wines, went to a lot of effort to achieve the right balance of flavour ripeness and acid structure with this wine, going for more ginger, apple and citrus characters to counter the rose and lychee that Gewürztraminer more commonly displays. The result is no shrinking violet: instead, it’s a rich, powerful beauty that you are welcome to put in front of me anytime.
