Scotchmans Hill 2013 Bellarine Peninsula Shiraz, $39
Scotchmans Hill is probably best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but it also does some mighty fine Shiraz, and this is one that you really ought to get your hands on if you enjoy a medium-bodied style with lots of savoury complexity. There’s a jumble of spice, licorice, ripe plum and berry flavours, and a hint of pepper, along with fine tannins and nicely balanced oak. From a vineyard on top of an extinct volcano on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, the maritime climate has produced an elegant wine that could be put away for quite a few years yet – or be enjoyed today if you’re as eager as I am.
