Primo Estate 2018 Shale Stone Shiraz, $35
I always love a good McLaren Vale Shiraz and this one has the classic spiciness and plummy richness that is typical of the region. The fruit from Primo Estate’s McMurtrie Road Vineyard has all of this in spades, but what really sets it apart is the perfume and mineral texture that comes from the fruit grown in the shale stone of Primo’s higher altitude Angel Gully Vineyard in the McLaren Vale sub-region of Clarendon. This gives the wine an elegance and an appealing softness that nicely balances the higher tannins of the McMurtrie Road fruit. That coupled with a deliciously long finish makes this a wine to savour.
