Mount Avoca 2012 Estate Shiraz, $29.95
Although Mount Avoca has always produced very commendable wines from its vineyard in Victoria’s Pyrenees, it’s made some significant changes of late, and it really shows in the quality it is achieving. After six years of organic grape-growing, it received full organic accreditation in December 2013. Along with that, it has moved to small batch winemaking – sometimes just a few hundred litres at a time. That’s truly handcrafted, isn’t it? This rich full-bodied Shiraz is not a limited release but nevertheless it’s from an excellent vintage. It’s all smoothness and elegance with sweet fruit, a little bit of spice and a long finish to savour. We enjoyed it with a beautiful piece of beef with confit garlic butter.
