Lowe 2009 ‘Block 8’ Organic Shiraz, $30
There’s a time and place for all styles of wine but sometimes you just want to reach for a big red. Especially when you’ve just cooked a big, juicy steak. Mudgee Shiraz is generally full-bodied, dark and brooding, and this one’s certainly up there in the knock-your-socks-off stakes. But it has a brightness that is very appealing, with blueberry notes and subtle oak. Winemaker David Lowe says it was a dream harvest, without the extreme heat that caused grief elsewhere. Importantly for consumers seeking organic wine, this one’s been produced without sprays, from an unirrigated vineyard. Is that what they call drinking without guilt?
Don’t you love hearing “dream harvest”? When farmers do it tough year after year and finally they get that wonderful harvest, I think it’s just great.
