Logan 2013 Pinot Noir, $30
Pinot Noir is a temperamental character. It can take some time to be tamed – nine years in the case of this standout release from the cool climate Orange region of New South Wales. Winemaker Peter Logan thinks he has finally nailed it after an incredible amount of hard work. Every year he trialled different treatments, adopting the most successful ones for the following vintage. As a result, there’s been a steady development in the quality of Logan Pinot over the past eight vintages. This latest one has a judicious balance of tannins, resulting in a wine that is both complex and layered, yet delicate and smooth. It’s got lovely aromas of cherries and rose petals. We enjoyed it with duck, a classic combo, but it would pair equally well with lamb or veal.
