Hahndorf Hill 2014 “Gru” Gruner Veltliner, $28
I love this Austrian white variety for its crisp, fresh, food-friendly nature. This Adelaide Hills winemaker is so dedicated to getting it right that it did three separate harvests to get a good spread of ripeness and fruit flavours. Each batch underwent a different fermentation, including one batch that was wild-fermented in old French barriques. The wine is a blend of all three components and, as such, has layers of texture and flavour. There’s a bit of citrus, a bit of stonefruit and a bit of spice, making it perfect with Asian, seafood and vegetarian dishes. We enjoyed it with this Smoked trout and pear salad, a perfect summer combo.
