Barossan X redefines classic Barossa Valley Shiraz.
Barossan X redefines classic Barossa Valley Shiraz.

Do you like your Shiraz twisted, daring or radical? That’s the question Peter Lehmann Wines is asking with its Barossan X wines offering new ways of enjoying Australia’s most popular red variety.

The new wines redefine classic Barossa Valley Shiraz by blending in a small amount of less common varieties (in Australia at least) that add a distinctive touch.

Twisted has a dash of the Spanish variety Tempranillo, Daring has a dash of the Italian variety Montepulciano, and Radical has a dash of the Portuguese variety Touriga. Consider this an excursion around Europe!

The wines are bright and modern and come in bold packaging with a vibrant X splashed across the label. Look out for them in Dan Murphy’s and BWS now, or buy online at peterlehmannwines.com

We sampled the trio in the company of wine-loving friends who were impressed by this fresh new take on an old favourite. To further rewrite the rules, you could even lightly chill these wines to enjoy them in the warmer months.

Barossan X Twisted Shiraz, $23: With a twist of Tempranillo, this medium-bodied wine is ruby-red with a bright crimson hue. Red cherry notes are lifted with hints of Turkish delight and florals that make it a nice counterbalance for spicy food. Try it with chorizo paella or a Spanish seafood stew.

Barossan X Daring Shiraz, $23: With a dash of Montepulciano, this is the most intense of the three, being fuller-bodied, darker in colour and a little smoky.  Plum and blackberry aromas lead into savoury notes of sour cherry and dried fruit. With a firm grip and a rich, long finish, this would pair well with a hearty steak.

Barossan X Radical Shiraz, $23: A splash of Touriga Nacionale adds some exotic aromatics to this generously rich, fruity Shiraz. Plum and dark fruit notes are lifted with hints of chocolate, vanilla and star anise. Enjoy this vibrant wine with beef burgundy or beef ragù pappardelle.
