If you’re looking for a wine decanter – and there are many good reasons why you should use one – here’s one that has real wow factor for a ridiculously low price.
The elegant, U-shaped Lennox decanter normally sells for $69.95 and is currently reduced to $49.95, yet it looks as stylish as similar decanters selling many times the price.
It’s one of three new decanters from Wilkie Brothers, a premium glassware and tableware provider. The others in the range are the Argyle Decanter (normally $49.95, now $34.95) and the Kinross Decanter (normally $59.95, now $39.95).
All three handmade glass decanters are designed to help wine lovers get more out of their wines. Decanting a wine isn’t just about making it easier to serve or to look beautiful on the table, its primary purpose is to enhance the flavours through aeration and to separate any sediment that may have formed.
When you pour wine from a bottle into a decanter you are exposing all the liquid and allowing it to breathe. This amplifies its aromatics, harmonises its acids and tannins and smooths the texture much quicker than if it is served from the bottle.
Decanting, particularly with older wines that could have a buildup of sediment, allows you to separate the sediment from the liquid and leave the sediment in the bottle, so you can serve the wine from the decanter with confidence.
Although most wine sold in Australia is consumed soon after purchase, all wines — red, white, young or old – can benefit from being decanted as the wine opens up and reveals its full potential. Interestingly, many restaurants used to decant wine for this reason.
The Argyle decanter is an everyday decanter and especially suitable for white wine because it can be used on ice or put in the fridge. The Kinross decanter is a classic all-rounder, looks a bit more striking and is a great centrepiece for a dinner party as it is sturdy and hard to knock over.
We love the Lennox decanter – which, disclaimer, we were gifted by Sheldon and Hammond to try for ourselves – as it does a great job of decanting the old wines that we still have lurking in our cellar. And it looks so impressive, very much like U-shaped decanters that cost many times the price.
