Holding A Nation’s Memories

The National Archives of Australia describes itself as the memory of the nation, containing millions of records that reflect Australia’s history and identity. If you want to investigate your family history, war service records or migration and citizenship records then here’s where you start. Find out about the sinking of HMAS Sydney in 1941 or the 60-year history of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme.

The archives contain all the country’s government records and its Memory of a Nation exhibition features hundreds of treasures that are fascinating, quirky and moving, including Banjo Patterson’s handwritten sheet music of Waltzing Matilda and the ballot balls used for conscription in the Vietnam War. There is always something different, intriguing and often very unexpected at the National Archives.
