St. Michael’s Church, Mondsee, Austria, setting for wedding in The Sound of Music.

The most successful film musical ever, The Sound of Music, celebrates its 50th birthday this year. It’s only timely then to share our photo of St. Michael’s Church in the beautiful lakeside town of Mondsee, Austria, the setting for Maria and Georg von Trapp’s wedding in the film. For a long time, Salzburg, home to many of the film locations, barely recognized the Hollywood movie. By the time we visited in 2007, it was starting to cater for interest from abroad. We visited the twin-towered Baroque church with its seven beautiful side altars just on dusk, on a glorious winter’s day, as the lights strung across the village streets twinkled in the fading light. These days, The Sound of Music is big business in Salzburg, with tourists flocking to film locations in and around the city.
