Entertainment App
The Entertainment Book was a staple in Aussie households. Now it comes as an app.

Who remembers the Entertainment Book? It was a staple in Aussie households, raising funds for community organizations and offering discounts for dining and entertainment as we tore out the coupons to save a few dollars.

The Entertainment Group, which runs the program, this year celebrates 30 years of fundraising. Over that time, it has helped raise more than $110 million for more than 50,000 Australian charities and non-profit organizations. In view of the cost-of-living crisis and its impact on hospitality businesses, purchasing a membership makes more sense than ever.

These days, accessing the program is as easy as downloading an app on your phone. And while you can still sign up for a single city membership for 12 months ($70), a 12-month multi-city membership ($120) offers discounts in 20 cities across Australia and New Zealand. The discounts (of up to 50%) and 2-for-1 offers cover dining experiences, travel, shopping and entertainment.

Founder and CEO, Heidi Halson, says a lot of people don’t realise that while the savings are compelling for customers, the hospitality industry also benefits as the Entertainment app generates business and introduces new customers. “We’re often told people find restaurants and experiences they never would have heard about otherwise,” says Halson.

Sydney’s Catalina Restaurant joined what was then the Entertainment Book in 1995.

Some of Australia’s best-loved establishments offer discounts, including ESQ, Glass Brasserie, NEL Restaurant, Pilu, Pony Lounge, Public Dining Room, Ormeggio, Berowra Waters Inn, and Din Tai Fung. In travel, Emirates, Hawaiian Airlines, Europcar and Vibe Hotels are among those on offer. Entertainment partners include Event Cinemas, Hoyts, Palace Cinemas and Belvoir Theatre.

Sydney’s Catalina restaurant, Hyatt Hotels, Event Cinemas, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra are just some of those that have been around since day one. 20% of every membership sold goes to the fundraiser. Charities, schools, hospitals, Rotary and sporting clubs, community groups, research foundations and surf lifesaving club are among those who have benefited over the years.

Apart from the convenience of not having to carry a book or coupons around, there’s another benefit of having it all on an app: new offers are added daily.
