We hear a lot about how many ‘standard drinks’ we can consume without going over the limit, but what is a standard drink?
It’s something that a lot of consumers have trouble understanding – perhaps not surprisingly when beer can range from anywhere between 0.7 to 1.5 standard drinks per serve and even more if you are drinking pints at the pub.
According to preventative health expert Dr Ross Walker, a standard drink is exactly 12.5mL or 10g of pure alcohol (regardless of the beverage) and it takes the average person about an hour for the body to metabolise that amount of alcohol out of their blood stream.
This means that many well-meaning and responsible drinkers who have one to two drinks in a night may actually be consuming two to four standard drinks. Confusing, right?
